Meesha was referred to Shanti Aid in July 2021 by National Legal Services, which recognized her need for emotional support after enduring abuse from her husband and his sisters. After leaving the matrimonial home, Meesha and her three children, one of whom has autism, faced uncertainty and instability.
Meesha and her children initially moved in with her husband’s aunt, but this arrangement was challenging, particularly for her eldest son. She feared that returning to her abusive home might be her only option. Finding a stable, safe environment for her children was her top priority.
How we helped: Shanti Aid helped Meesha secure private rental accommodation with financial support from her family. The charity also partnered with Buttle UK to provide furniture and assisted with school applications for her children. Additionally, Shanti Aid’s volunteer child therapist provided crucial online counselling for her autistic son, helping him feel secure and settled in their new home.
A brighter future: Meesha’s life has transformed significantly. She attended college part-time, passed her driving test, and became more independent and confident. She continues to attend Shanti Aid sessions when possible and has become a trusted friend and mentor to other women in the community. Meesha’s journey from fear and instability to confidence and support is a testament to her resilience and the impact of Shanti Aid’s support.
