Alina* was introduced to Shanti Aid by a friend who had also received support from the charity. She had fled from Luton to Birmingham, escaping severe domestic abuse inflicted by both her husband and in-laws. Her two children were also victims of this abuse. Despite the involvement of police, social services, and Women’s Aid, Alina struggled to find the support she needed.

After escaping to Birmingham, Alina faced continued turmoil, including inadequate support at her initial refuge. She suffered from depression and anxiety due to her traumatic experiences, making it difficult for her to rebuild her life and provide for her children.

How we helped: Alina turned to Shanti Aid for guidance and support, seeking to improve her skills through training courses and to connect with others in similar situations through the Chai & Chat sessions. With Shanti Aid’s help, she was relocated to a more suitable refuge and began attending regular sessions where she made new friends and felt part of a trusted community.

Looking to the future: Over the past year, Alina has flourished. She has gained qualifications, built her CV, and joined employment agencies in search of part-time work. Her confidence, independence, and sense of community have grown immensely. Alina continues to inspire others with her determination to create a better life for herself and her children, and Shanti Aid remains committed to supporting her on her journey to a brighter future.

Shanti means Peace & Calm
